A little about me.

I'm Haoxu Wang, also known as Hao.

I'm currently in my second year of the Bachelor of Culinary Arts programme at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Before starting my degree, I completed the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 4) at Ara Institute of Canterbury in 2024.

My previous work experience includes working as a commis chef at Crowne Plaza Christchurch, a kitchen assistant at Nurse Maude Hospital Kitchen, and kitchen staff and waiter at a Japanese buffet restaurant in Shanghai.

These experiences have given me opportunities to work in different kitchen environments, from hotel food preparation to healthcare catering and restaurant service.

I enjoy preparing different types of dishes, experimenting with ingredients, and improving my cooking techniques and presentation.

Through this website, I want to share some of the dishes I've made over the years and document my continued development in the culinary industry.

How I work

I take a practical, careful approach to kitchen work. I am willing to learn, value punctuality and teamwork, and respect kitchen procedures. When I am unsure, I ask questions and check with my supervisor. I aim to build my skills and take on more responsibility as I develop.

Visa & work eligibility
I hold a student visa and can work within its conditions. I can discuss my current work eligibility with a prospective employer.
Availability
I am interested in part-time kitchen work alongside my studies. Shifts and a start date can be agreed around my class timetable and visa conditions. I can share my timetable in advance to help with planning.
Pay & development
I hope to start slightly above the New Zealand minimum wage, with pay discussed in relation to the role and responsibilities. As my skills and contribution grow, I would welcome opportunities to take on more responsibility and review my pay.

From my kitchen journey.

A selection of dishes I have prepared during my culinary studies and kitchen experience, including practical training, guided cooking sessions, and personal work.

Projects in focus.

Separate project records, beyond the food gallery. Documentation is still being prepared.

Beyond the kitchen.

A colourful jigsaw puzzle on a table, with its reference image on a tablet.

Swimming

Swimming is part of my daily routine. It helps me stay active, unwind and ease the pressures of the day. The steady rhythm gives me space to clear my head and reflect at my own pace.

Jigsaw puzzles

I enjoy the quiet focus of working on a jigsaw puzzle, one piece at a time. It is a way to practise patience, sustain my concentration and take satisfaction in gradual progress.

Reading about cooking

I regularly read books on culinary theory to broaden my knowledge and deepen my understanding of the ideas behind cooking techniques.

This is just one side of me. There are more stories and possibilities to discover as you get to know me.
